By working together, all road and rail assets will achieve high levels of utilisation, thereby enabling a commercially sustainable door-to-door solution for companies involved in the export of fresh products.

The proposition is unique in that all rail traction is provided by a single rail freight operator across three countries, with the involvement of DB Schenker’s European subsidiaries: Euro Cargo Rail in France and Spain.

Stobart’s planning infrastructure and capability in the fresh and chilled sector enables shipments to be monitored from the pack-house to the store.

The changes to catering have come about as part of BA’s review to reduce costs and waste without heavily impacting on the customer experience.

NEW YORK – About 360 maintenance, cleaning, painting and managerial positions will be eliminated in 2010 as part of NYC Transit’s yearly cost cutting.

That means 63 of 1,201 subway-car cleaners and 25 of 1,515 station cleaners will be gone next year, Howard Roberts, the MTA’s subway and bus chief said yesterday.

Between 2009 and 2010, 308 of 2,420 managerial positions at NYC Transit will be cut.

The 2010 cuts will save $37.7 million, but won’t include layoffs. They will come mainly through attrition and job reassignments.

And $5.2 million of the savings will come from eliminating administrative positions, Roberts said.

He added that he cut as many managerial spots as possible.

“I will cut somebody sitting in an office very, very quickly compared to somebody who was out cleaning stations and cleaning cars,” he said.

“But this is the reality of the numbers and the [financial] pressure that we’re under.”

This year, the MTA also began cutting hundreds of station agents and maroon-vested roving station customer assistants, a process that will take years and save millions of dollars more.

Transit watchdog Gene Russianoff said riders will feel the cuts. “The MTA says they can do more with less. In my experience, they usually do less with less,” he said.

(Update AP, July 29)

NEW YORK — The worsening economy is taking a toll on New York’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority, despite a nearly $2.7 billion state bailout.

But the giant transit agency said Wednesday it still expects to keep its promise to state leaders to get through 2010 without raising fares or cutting service.

The MTA said the bailout, cost-cutting and proceeds from recent fare and toll hikes will offset dramatic drops in tax revenue and ridership.

The agency says it expects to get less than half as much real estate tax income this year as it had last year – a projection that has worsened significantly in the last five months. Projected fare and toll collections also are dropping, with ridership off more than 3 percent since last year.

Norfolk Southern Railway and Union Pacific Railroad have launched a new expedited intermodal service specifically designed for refrigerated trailer shippers between Los Angeles and Atlanta.

This new service gives customers the option to have their refrigeration units serviced during the stop in El Paso, Texas, significantly reducing the risk of protective service failure during transit.

With a speed similar to truck transport (more than 500 miles per day), this is the industry’s fastest intermodal service between Los Angeles and Atlanta.

Norfolk Southern Railway operates approximately 21,000 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, and serves every major container port in the eastern US. It also operates the most extensive intermodal network in the East.

Union Pacific Railroad links 23 states in the western two-thirds of the country, offering competitive routes from all major West Coast and Gulf Coast ports to eastern gateways. It connects with Canada’s rail systems and is the only railroad serving all six major gateways to Mexico.

The Rail Freight Group (RFG) has welcomed the first temperature controlled rail freight cargo through the Channel Tunnel for some years, with the arrival of a cargo of melons from Italy.

The cargo arrived in the regular Norfolk Line train from Novara (Italy) to Hams Hall. Full track and trace was provided and the temperature was continuously monitored.

The train is managed on behalf of Norfolk Line by Freight Europe UK, and train operators along the route comprised private operator Crossrail (Italy and Switzerland), SNCF Frêt (France), Europorte 2 (Channel Tunnel) and Colas Rail (UK).

According to RFG chairman Tony Berkeley, the success of this new temperature controlled service demonstrates that the movement of fruit and vegetables from Italy, Spain and other locations through the Channel Tunnel works effectively.

Freight Europe’s Henry des Longchamps commented: “This is an important success which demonstrates that a complex rail venture can work with a good operational result when there is a joint partnership, commitment and common interest.”

CHICAGO, July 10 (Reuters) – The Obama administration on Friday approved a bid by Continental Airlines Inc (CAL.N) to join UAL Corp’s (UAUA.O) United Airlines and other carriers in the global Star Alliance.

The final U.S. Transportation Department order, which gave the carriers limited immunity from antitrust law, permits carriers to share pricing, scheduling and other information within the alliance.

Opponents of the immunity had argued that allowing Continental into the alliance would dampen competition and harm consumers with higher fares.

UAL and Continental, however, cheered the government decision, which enables carriers to build international networks without running afoul of U.S. law that discourages mergers between domestic and overseas airlines.

“United, Continental and the Star Alliance carriers will be able to compete more effectively in an increasingly global air travel market,” UAL Chief Executive Glenn Tilton said in a statement.

“It ensures global competition with other antitrust immunized alliances while encouraging the retention and growth of open skies between the U.S. and other nations,” said Continental Chief Executive Larry Kellner in a statement.

Continental shares jumped on the news, gaining 6.6 percent to $10.01 on the New York Stock Exchange early Friday afternoon. UAL fell 0.3 percent to $3.19 on Nasdaq.

“From a network perspective, their network just got a lot bigger, and it will allow them to be more competitive with other airlines,” said Stifel Nicolaus analyst Hunter Keay.

UAL and Continental initiated the partnership last year in lieu of a discarded plan to merge the two carriers. Some experts, including UAL’s Tilton, say the airline industry desperately needs consolidation to remove excess capacity and cut costs.

OVERCOMING ANTITRUST CONCERNS

The Star Alliance was created in 1997 with member airlines offering a combined 17,000 daily departures to 160 countries.

The nearly two dozen members of the Star Alliance include US Airways Group Inc (LCC.N), Deutsche Lufthansa AG (LHAG.DE), Air Canada (ACa.TO) (ACb.TO), Air China Ltd (601111.SS) and Thai Airways International THAI.BK.

The immunity designation allows alliances to maximize revenues by operating crucial aspects of their businesses as one company, a practice normally prohibited by antitrust laws.

The order, signed by Christa Fornarotto, an acting assistant secretary at the Transportation Department, limited antitrust immunity for some U.S. routes to Canada and to Beijing, acknowledging concerns raised by antitrust officials at the U.S. Department of Justice.

“The venture, as well as the broader alliance, will create substantial new service options and fare benefits for consumers,” the Transportation Department said in the 3O-page order.

“After careful consideration of DOJ’s and other parties’ arguments, we confirm our tentative decision that this application is not anti-competitive,” the government said. (Reporting by John Crawley, Julie Vorman, Kyle Peterson and Deepa Seetharaman; Editing by Tim Dobbyn and Richard Chang)

(ENP Newswire)

SOUTH KOREA – The world’s first RFID-based scheme for single-journey reusable ticketing in mass transportation has recently gone live in Seoul, South Korea, and is expected to save some 3 billion Won (over US$ 2.4 million) per year using a robust solution based on RFID technology from STMicroelectronics (NYSE: STM), a leading developer of RFID chips. Serving a city of 10 million people and operating since 1974, the Seoul Subway became a part of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s New Transportation System combining subway and bus networks in July 2004. The New Transportation system introduced a refillable traffic-card system called T-Money, alongside conventional paper tickets for cash-paying passengers. Now, to save the cost of provisioning more than 450 million printed paper tickets every year, estimated at 6.8 Won each, the Seoul Subway is replacing its paper tickets with RFID smart cards called Single Journey Tickets. In the new system, automated vending machines issue the Single Journey Ticket in exchange for each passenger’s payment plus a 500 Won deposit for the ticket. Each ticket contains ST’s SRT512 contactless memory chip, which has features that allow the cards to be returned and re-issued to new passengers. This recycling of the tickets will save the cost and environmental impact of generating hundreds of millions of disposable paper tickets. ST has worked with card issuer Korea Smart Card Co. Ltd. (KSCC), which operates the New Transportation System for the Seoul Metropolitan Government, to optimize the SRT512 to support the subway’s ticketing system. ‘Support provided by ST has been invaluable in ensuring timely introduction of the Single Journey Ticket, particularly in providing standards-compliant products, technical expertise, and stability of supply,’ said Kevin C.Moon, CFO, Korea Smart Card Co., Ltd. ‘The system is secure and robust and will reduce operating costs by eliminating paper tickets and saving staff time.’
